Safeguarding & Child Protection
At William Murdoch !Primary School, safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. We are committed to ensuring the safety, wellbeing and welfare of every child in our care. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and we are committed to ensuring that every child is safe, supported and able to thrive. Safeguarding is about ensuring that everyone is safe from harm – safe from bullying, safe from people who could abuse, safe from discrimination or harassment – and that everyone feels safe in our environment.
We recognise our moral and statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of all pupils. We expect all staff, governors and volunteers to share this commitment and to act in the best interests of children at all times.
We aim to:
-
Provide a safe and secure environment for all pupils
-
Ensure all adults working with children are appropriately trained
-
Teach children how to stay safe, including online safety and digital wellbeing
-
Work in partnership with parents and external agencies
We work closely with external agencies, including Birmingham Safeguarding Children Partnership, to ensure that children receive the support they need. Under the Children’s Act we are duty bound to report any complaints of abuse to Birmingham Social Services. If a child passes information to us regarding any form of abuse whether physical, emotional, sexual or neglect, we are not allowed, under the law, to keep this information secret. The same law states if a member of staff suspects any form of abuse then the situation must be monitored closely and the information must be passed to Birmingham Social Services.

The school has a Policy for Safe Use of Images to protect the children. No photographs or videos should be taken on the school premises without prior consent from the Headteacher. DVDs produced at school are strictly for personal use only. The school uses CCTV images to reduce crime and monitor the school buildings in order to provide a safe and secure environment for pupils, staff and visitors and to prevent the loss or damage to school property.
We also recognise the importance of online safety. Pupils are taught how to stay safe online and appropriate filtering and monitoring systems are in place to protect them when using the internet in school.
